Robert Siciliano, founder of ChildrenSecurity.com, advises parents on the increase of child pornographers’ Internet activity

(BOSTON, Mass. – April 5, 2005 – ChildrenSecurity.com) According to reports, pedophiles are sharing child pornography with increasing frequency worldwide. The Internet is their medium of choice. Parents can control children’s exposure to sexual predators by educating themselves and employing online security technology.

A March 31 press release from Glendale, Calif.–based Panda Software reports that a recent operation has found and arrested more than 500 pedophiles worldwide, part of a network that had distributed about 20,000 incidences of online child pornography.

“Little Jenny’s 12-year-old friend Suzie from the online chat room could very well be 42-year-old John,” said Robert Siciliano, a nationally televised and quoted authority on personal security and identity theft. “Online, it is easy for a pedophile to assume a false identity and win the confidence of an unwitting child.” Siciliano has been featured on CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, and “Inside Edition” and in The New York Times.

“The Internet is a phenomenal medium for open communication,” Siciliano continued. “This beneficial atmosphere also brings with it the dregs of society, and parents must remain vigilant against sexual predators who seek to establish rapport with children online.”

The frequency of pedophiles’ activity on the Internet appears to be increasing. The same Panda Software press release reports that Protegeles, a Spain-based non-governmental organization (NGO), received 1,500 calls per month in 2004 reporting child pornography on the Internet. Protegeles tallied 28,900 complaints between 2001 and 2004 and identified 1,990 pedophile communities.

Companies such as Panda Software and others offer technologies that parents can purchase to thwart online sexual predators’ unwanted advances. Various products will help to shield common online forums such as chat rooms from the attempts of undesirables to participate.

“The threat of online child pornography has reached critical mass,” said Siciliano. “A child can learn a lot on the Internet, but the dangers are ever-present. Formal training on how to spot suspicious online behavior is critical. Helpful technological tools already out there can help parents, who must educate themselves now.”
